Pep Band Constitution
Last Modified 10/27/06
- Name
The name of this organization shall hereafter be deemed the University of Chicago Pep Band.
- Purpose
To make noise by means of an instrument external to the human body and spread school spirit at athletic events and other important university and community occasions.
- Membership
- Any undergraduate or graduate student, staff member, or any person affiliated in any way with the university who is willing to make musical noises, spread good cheer and attend the meetings may be a member by being present at a meeting, instrument in hand.
- If we deem anything important enough to vote on, only members who are currently registered U of C students may vote for reasons unbeknownst to the author of this document.
- Officers
- Offices shall include Organization Director/President/Dictator, Musical Director/Conductor/Taskmaster, Treasurer/Author, Graduate Student Liaison/Band Historian/Webmaster and any other offices deemed necessary to the function of the band.
- Any currently enrolled Maroon willing to sacrifice his/her free time/study time may take an office.
- Any officer may pass his/her duties onto another willing Maroon provided they are both aware the transaction has taken place.
- The Organization Director/President/Dictator is in charge of communicating to the band members and the faculty liaisons. Such things that may need to be communicated are meeting times, equipment and uniform status, and food availability. The Organizational Director is also in charge of the general meeting organization and keeping the peace. The Musical Director chooses music to be performed, conducts the band during practices and performances, and has final authority regarding matters of style, instrumentation, balance, sectional coordination, and performance procedures. The Treasurer aides the Organizational Director with the handling of Pep Band funds and maintains the constitution and other official forms. Any other offices which may be spontaneously created will have duties that are at that time explained to the other members of the band. The Music Director and the Treasurer may be the same person, as may the Organizational Director and the Treasurer. However, the Pep Band leadership must consist of at least two individuals with distinct titles at any given time. Furthermore, at least two of the offices must, for purposes of RSO registration, be filled by undergraduate students.
- The most senior or most willing graduate student member of the Pep Band shall hold the office of Graduate Student Liaison/Band Historian/Webmaster. The exact nature of this office, as well as the actual execution of its duties, is left to the discretion of the Graduate Student Liaison or to whomever he/she delegates same. If only one graduate student is a member of the Pep Band, he/she is allowed but not obligated to fill this position regardless of seniority or willingness.
- Officers are chosen by whomever volunteers for the position. If more than one person does so, the prospective officers may decide between themselves how to allocate the office, or they may choose to share the office, or they may divide up responsibilities amongst themselves, subject to the approval of the other or outgoing officers. If they are unable to resolve the matter, or if at least one prospective officer is not satisfied by such arrangements, the existing and/or outgoing officers shall mediate. Their decision must be predicated on seniority of the prospective officers, the free time or time commitment the prospective officers are offering, the dedication/enthusiasm/competence of the prospective officers, and (for reasons unbeknownst to the author) the ability of the prospective officers to sing the fight song ("Wave the Flag for Old Chicago") with the fewest errors. However, the relative weight of these factors is left to the discretion of the mediating officers (within reason, as except for the final factor all are important and listed for a purpose), and other criteria may be considered as well.
- Meetings AKA Practices
Meetings shall be held in order to practice music and foster group bonding. Each week the date/time of the next practice shall be decided on and announced. If it is not announced at that time [the time of the previous meeting?] members will be informed of it via email posted by the Organizational Director, his appointee, or other volunteers.
- Adviser(s)
We shall maintain contact with the Athletic Department, as well as the Office of the Reynolds Club and Student Activities (ORCSA), through an adviser in each respective department. For purposes of advising and general nomenclature, the Pep Band is officially under the jurisdiction of the Athletic Department (similar to the Cheerleaders). However, the Band is currently classified as a Fine Arts Registered Student Organization (RSO), and this is the classification deemed most accurate.
